Hinne VAN DER ZANT

PhD student at LIttoral ENvironnement et Sociétés (LIENSs), France

Bonjour !

I am a PhD student at LIENSs (La Rochelle University). My research focuses on linking seafloor biogeochemical processes to the overlying ocean waters, with a particular interest in ocean acidification, deoxygenation, and the marine carbon cycle.
I develop and use numerical models of sediment diagenesis to quantify sediment–water exchange (e.g., oxygen, nutrients, and carbon/alkalinity) and to understand how these benthic processes influence water-column chemistry and ecosystem functioning.

A key part of my work is turning detailed process understanding into tools that can be integrated into larger-scale ocean models, improving how seafloor processes are represented in global simulations. In parallel, I work at the Dutch Marine Energy Centre, focusing on modelling questions related to offshore renewable energy and how combining different technologies can help shape the energy grid of the future.
Before joining LIENSs, I completed an MSc in Marine Sciences at Utrecht University, where I developed my interest in ocean biogeochemistry.
Outside the lab, you’ll usually find me in or on the ocean, especially surfing or kitesurfing.
